“The Flowers of War” – Powerfully Directed and Emotionally Gripping

“The Flowers of War” may not be funny entertainment for summer watching, but this Chinese drama, nominated for the Golden Globe, has plenty of emotional and riveting action and passion as an American mortician arrives in a Chinese cathedral to bury its priest, and by some twists of fate turns into a reluctant hero as he has to save an increasing number of Chinese people, teenage girls and prostitutes included, from the marauding Japanese soldiers during the second Sino-Japanese war.
